October 27, 2015 -

On Friday, October 23rd, the southwest coast of Mexico was hit with a Category 5 hurricane. Though Hurricane Patricia’s sustained 200 mph winds were the strongest hurricane ever recorded at sea, the winds reduced to 165 mph by the time it hit the western coast of Mexico. It continued to lose strength as it crossed land and was downgraded to a tropical storm. Thousands were evacuated and there is no recorded loss of life.

While there are currently no deaths recorded, there is damage to homes, loss of basic belongings, and crop loss due to flooding in some areas. The full extent of the damage is still being determined.

CRS Response

Catholic Relief Services is working with Caritas Mexico staff to assess the damage and formulate an emergency response effort. CRS, along with other organizations, will assist with first-aid kits, food and medicine. CRS stands ready to provide additional staffing and resources, if needed. We will provide more information on support for hurricane victims as it becomes available.

Please join us in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Mexico.

A Prayer for those threatened by Hurricane Patricia:

Lord of Earth and Sea,
When a storm rose upon the waters the disciples cried out in great fear. But in you they found safety.
In you they found calm.
In you they found help:
Their shelter, their bulwark, their highest ground.

Now, even as a great storm threatens our brothers and sisters in Mexico
We know that you are greater still—mightier than the swiftest wind,
More omnipotent than the crashing waves.
You are as you have ever been:
Our shelter, our bulwark, our highest ground.

And so, we pray with St. Scholastica our patroness in times of storms
And Our Lady of Guadalupe the ever-faithful patroness of Mexico.
With all the saints, we cry to you
Together with the peoples of Mexico:
Make our hands your hands.
Make our hearts your hearts.
Help us be for those in harm’s way
What you have been for us and have called us to be for your people:
Their shelter, their bulwark, their highest ground.
