Emergency Appeal for Philippines

Just a few days ago, a storm of tremendous size and impact, Typhoon Haiyan, has passed over the Philippines, killing nearly 10,000 of our Filipino brothers and sisters and with more than 600,000 displaced. Unfortunately, the region is barely recovering from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake just three weeks ago and there is a shortage of supplies.

Typhoon Haiyan is the equivalent to a category 5 hurricane and the impact from the storm has left the Philippines and nearby islands with no water, shelter, or electricity. CRS will prioritize emergency shelter, water and sanitation, household relief items (blankets, kitchen items, cookware), potable water, and toilets in this time of emergency. Catholic Relief Services is working with the local government, Caritas and local parishes to maximize response and recovery efforts to reach those most affected by this destructive storm.

To support CRS respond to this emergency in the Philippines, please make a donation which can be sent to:

We thank you in advance for your gracious generosity. Please find the following prayers for your use.

Prayer of Intercession:
God, who quiets great winds and stills rough seas, we ask your protection for the people of the Philippines. Comfort them in their fear. Stay close to them in their danger. And we ask the intercession of Your Blessed Mother, that together with her and with all your holy saints, we may stand in solidarity with our Filipino brothers and sisters through their darkest hour, through their longest night. Give us the courage to remain steadfast to reach out to them in their need, to comfort them in their sorrow, to hold them as closely as You hold them, to see them through to morning. Amen.

 Prayers of the Faithful:
For the people of the Philippines and all affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
For their protection and their comfort, and that we may stand with them
in their time of trouble, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.

Bulletin or Website Blurb:
Millions of our brothers and sisters in the Philippines have been devastatingly affected by Typhoon Haiyan. As the country struggles amongst the devastation of this storm, please consider making a donation to assist local relief groups by visiting www.ChicagoPeaceAndJustice.org/PhilippinesRelief.

The event in the Philippines really should have more than a line requesting donations in a parish bulletin. The Filipino people, who I know, are kind, gentle, compassionate and faith -filled people. Why can’t the parishes have a collection for them?

    • opjchicago says:

We are coordinating emergency appeals now. Over thanksgiving weekend, the diocese is requesting pastors donate the thanksgiving collection or have a special collection be for those affected in the Philippines.

  2. Fr. Hily Gonzales, CS says:

Thank your for your act of SOLIDARITY to the Filipino people. God bless you!

  3. Clarissa Aljentera says:

Or you can personally e-mail your pastors, pastoral associates, or leadership at the parish and ask them for a personal appeal for a second collection much like I did this afternoon.

Don’t wait for others and take your role of discipleship seriously.

Indeed this is a great moment to show our solidarity with
our people & our God because inspite of this catastrophy
we are going through, little miracles have already happened.
Our God is not angry or trying to punish us but is telling us
better things are coming forth from this. So let us continue
helping one another & show our Love & Unity for our Country
& our Beloved & Awesome GOD & our Dear USA.
    TY! GB!

I’m glad there will be a collection for the Philippines but why on Thursday – not too many people go to church on Thanksgiving. Why not have the collection on Sunday & several following Sundays.
I’ve already phoned in my donation to Catholic Relief Services. Please do the same.

  7. Island Traveler says:

God bless you and your organization for helping out the victims of the worst tragedy to hit the Philippines. So many I know are helping out in whatever way they can. I grew up in Capiz and Capiznons in Houston and elsewhere are trying to raise funds to help rebuild the homes, the local churches and the hearts of the place they will always call “home.”
