We are proud to see Our Lady of Sorrows Saturday Hot Breakfast animating Catholic teaching on Chicago's West Side. This program is a 2015 CRS Rice Bowl grantee, using their grant to provide fresh meals and build a welcoming community. Recently, Archbishop Cupich joined the kitchen for a Saturday breakfast.
A Letter From Fr. Christopher Krymski of Our Lady of Sorrows:
Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica Parish has hosted a Saturday Hot Breakfast Program for the past 17 years on the West Side of Chicago. Our guests are homeless, poor and the veterans of the area. We serve what I call a “Cadillac Breakfast” of cold cereal, hot grits, scrambled eggs, hash brown potato wedge, sausages, toast, jelly, orange juice and hot coffee. As many guests have remarked to me, “Father, thank you for serving fresh food as I don’t get sick on your food."
We buy the fresh materials for the breakfast. We are entirely supported by donations and grant money that comes to $400 a Saturday for food and paper products. Right now we serve this breakfast at 7 am after the shelters empty for the morning. Three times a year we give out clean clothes, coats and blankets to our guests. At times we have served over 250 guests on a Saturday.
We have over twenty volunteers from the parish, other churches and schools who come at 5am to start cooking the breakfast, 7am to serve the breakfast and 8:30am to clean the Parish Hall.
We are very ecumenical in welcoming volunteers from Protestant denominations and interreligious with the support of the Muslim Women’s Alliance. Last month, Archbishop Blase Cupich arrived to help serve in the food line. We had 217 guests that Saturday. Thank you for providing a grant to help us feed the hungry on the West Side of Chicago.
God bless…Fr. Christopher L. Krymski, osm
The Our Lady of Sorrows Saturday Hot Breakfast Program is supported by a grant from the Lenten CRS Rice Bowl collection. When you pray, fast, and give with CRS during Lent, 75% of your gift goes overseas, but 25% remains in Chicago to fight hunger and poverty right here!
